Richard and Marion Rottenbury moved to Oxenleaze Farm in 1970 and have worked this 156 acre sheep farm on the Southern fringes of Exmoor National Park ever since then. In 1976, they took the decision to diversify and established Oxenleaze Farm Caravans, a small and friendly caravan park with the accent on peace and tranquillity.
They have now been joined by their son Ian, making it a true family enterprise.
"Many of our visitors return year after year. They come to get away from it all, unwind and escape the stress and strain of modern day living. We have gradually extended the park, but ensured that it can never become overcrowded or 'spoilt' and, having sampled other caravan holiday homes, we are determined to keep it exactly as our visitors want it to be".
The caravans are set around a landscaped, tree-lined meadow and we have recently extended this into a 2 acre adjoining field which enjoys lovely, far-reaching views across rolling fields.
Our superb 6 berth Luxury and Super Luxury caravans offer extremely good value accommodation for families or mixed couples (no teenage or all male/female groups can be accommodated). Being away from it all a car is really essential. We have no near neighbours, just quiet leafy lanes and undulating farmland so you are sure to relax and feel close to nature. The surroundings can truly be described as un-commercialised and provide many opportunities to see rare birds and wild life, as well as seeing all the farm animals in their natural environment. Don't forget to bring your camera and binoculars!
We are only 10 minutes drive from Wiveliscombe (6mls). Local shopping facilities include - a small supermarket (open late, most days), Post Office, butchers, chemist, newsagents, Bank and several Inns, etc.
A popular facility at Oxenleaze is our heated swimming pool, which is available throughout the season at no extra charge.
Children and non-swimmers must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times, so if Dad's gone fishing for a while, what better way for the rest of the family to enjoy themselves?
Our Laundry Room is equipped with all the essentials whilst on holiday and will make the "chores" seem not so bad after all.
A former stone barn has now been converted into a spacious Games Room where pool and table tennis can be played by the more energetic! A pay-phone is provided and there is plenty of local information and maps on display.
We are open from Easter to the end of October and sincerely look forward to welcoming you to Oxenleaze.
Each well-equipped caravan is always kept spotlessly clean and tidy for your arrival, with hard standing for cars alongside each one. Colour TVs, gas cookers, 'fridges, shower rooms, flush toilets and fitted carpets feature in all caravans. The Super Luxuries have even more up-market furnishings. Blankets and pillows are supplied, but please bring your own bed linen.
There are a great variety of things to do locally - walking, riding, sailing, sightseeing, windsurfing, touring or trout fishing (we are close to Wimbleball Lake and Clatworthy Reservoir), but Oxenleaze is renowned for its excellent coarse fishing, and many venture no further than our lakes. Truly a "fisherman's paradise", the 3 lakes occupy 2 acres in a beautiful valley setting, only a short walk (500m) from your doorstep and you can drive to within 50m.
It is extremely well stocked with carp, tench, roach, rudd and bream and there is no closed season. All fish, which must be returned to the water after fishing, can be caught on maggot casters, live maggots, bread, sweetcorn and luncheon meat. Fishing is free to residents.
The area all around Oxenleaze is one of the most varied in the South West and includes the wild, heather covered moorland of Exmoor and the Quantock Hills.
Home to an abundance of wildlife and breathtaking scenery, it is the only area in England (the other being Scotland) where herds of shy, red deer live in the wild. Equally cherished, native Exmoor ponies will often be seen alongside footpaths and bridleways throughout the National Park, which is carefully protected to preserve their habitat.
The rocky cliffs and bays of North Devon contrast with seaside resorts and wide sandy beaches at Woolacombe, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay. There are also several National Trust properties, gardens & castles, historic villages and thatched cottages where a real clotted cream tea makes the perfect end to your day's exploring.
